Sotto reigns over the gastronomic man’s land that is Beverlywood. If the restaurant had opened Downtown, it may have gone unnoticed; but in this neighborhood deprived of good eateries, it’s the best thing that could happen to your late-night past cravings. Sotto’s happy dads are Zach Pollack and Steve Samson: they met at Grace, were reunited at in Sona (where we fell in love with Shawn Pham, formerly at Simbal and Kuniko Yagi, formerly at Hinoki and the Bird) and opened Pizzeria Ortica and Sotto. The pair chose to give Sotto a taste of Southern Italy, with Neapolitan pizza and specialties from Puglia or Sicily, such as “Panelle di ceci” which are chickpea fritters served with lemon and Ragusano shavings. Skip the chewy pizzas to save room for pasta, pork tomahawk or spicy Calabrian sausage. Take a leap of faith and order dishes that you do not understand: casarecce pasta with lamb and pecorino, pittule with ricotta and grilled mackerel scarpecce. For dessert, get the cannolo: A) you won’t be able to share it, and B) it’s just what the doctor ordered.
