Lalibela is a tiny haven in Little Ethiopia: a charming outdoor terrace, an entire family managing the front and back of house, and a lack of liquor license that allows you to BYOB with no corkage fee: and if you forgot to bring a nice bottle of wine, get a six pack at the 7-11 next door. Choose the ‘veggie utopia’ to share (a mix of lentils, potatoes, and some greens…) and meat dishes to add on the large teff galette called injera: yebeg alethcha wot (spicy slow-cooked lamb), derek tibs (beef sautéed with herbs), or whatever the chef and her daughters suggest that night. End the evening with a ceremony of Ethiopian coffee, and you’ll almost feel like you’re there.
