At the intersection of Silverlake, Los Feliz and East Hollywood, Ricky Piña gives away big smiles and $3 tacos in his “Ricky’s Fish Tacos” taco truck. His recipe for happiness? Only three options (fish, shrimp or Ricky’s special, which is simply a fish-shrimp mix) prepared Baja-style with a top secret ancestral batter recipe. Easy peasy: catfish breaded and golden, a little shredded cabbage covered with pico de gallo in a still warm tortilla. You help yourself to more or less spicy sauces, and order an agua fresca or horchata to soothe the taco fire. There’s no doubt why Los Angeles is the taco truck Mecca, with examples such as Mariscos Jalisco, Leo’s Tacos Truck and Ricky’s Fish Tacos. Although Ricky’s food truck almost never changes location, it is useful to follow his Twitter account to spot the occasional buy-three-get-one-free deals. Four is the magic number.
