When the former owner of Baroo starts a new Korean restaurant in the same spot, you leave everything else and run. BBQ+Rice is a minuscule restaurant hidden away on a strip mall, like most of the greatest LA restaurants are. The menu is short, using local ingredients with family recipes in the most humble manner. BBQ+Rice would have made Jonathan Gold proud, that’s for sure. Pay this LA legend a tribute by ordering the bulgogi bowl, with grilled beef marinated for 24 hours, shiitake mushrooms, leeks and onions. The galbi bowl somehow resembles a pot-au-feu (with tender braised beef, fingerling potatoes, carrots, etc.), while the tofu bowl is a perfect veggie option with fragrant eggplants, bok choy and cashew nuts. Look up while you’re devouring all of these bowls: the JGold might be smiling at you from above.
