The best kouign-amanns

Les meilleurs kouign-amanns à Los Angeles

If the abundance of juice bars and grain bowls didn’t give it away, LA residents love eating healthy. However, that doesn’t mean that we lack establishments that make phenomenal treats out of butter, sugar, and everything nice. Kouign-amanns, while hard to pronounce, are one of our favorite pastries. Here are five great places in LA to indulge in this super buttery, laminated Breton delicacy:

McCall’s

At McCall’s Meat and Fish Company, chef and co-owner Karen Yoo bakes some of the most beautiful kouign-amanns in all of Los Angeles. Blossom shaped, golden brown and chock-full of butter, these pastries are an indulgence we wholeheartedly support.

Republique

Republique has one of the finest pastry cases in Los Angeles. Hidden amongst gems like the Paris-Brest and Matcha Bostock are the seasonal kouign-amanns, constantly changing flavors and never failing to impress.

Clark Street

Some of the finest viennoiserie in LA can be found at Zach Hall’s Clark Street Bread. Though the chocolate croissant and cardamom buns are exceptional, the ultra-caramelized kouign-amann is a personal favorite.

Sycamore Kitchen

When most people head over to the pastry case at Sycamore Kitchen, they’re looking to get their hand on the legendary salted caramel pecan babka roll. For us though, it’s all about the buttercup, a very apt description for the laminated pastry that should be getting much more attention.
