It’s always hotter on the East Side. And when it’s hot, all you need is candied ginger ice cream, right? This microclimate might be the reason why Jeni Britton Bauer chose Los Feliz as her first store on the West Coast… Right at the corner of Hillhurst and Clarissa, close to a cute little records shop called High Society, people line up for a few scoops after a hike in Griffith Park. Jeni’s ice creams are made with milk from happy cows, who spend their time frolicking and grazing fresh grass in Ohio. Sure, you pay the price of quality, but look at that R&D: ylang-ylang and fennel, brambleberry sorbet (hello, stranger), wildberry lavender, Riesling poached pear… Even the classic flavors have a creative twist, the coffee ice cream is made with Intelligentsia espresso and chocolate is not just dark chocolate, but the darkest chocolate. It’s as simple as that.
