When Albert J. Langer opened Langer’s Deli in 1947, he had no idea that his Number 19 sandwich would be nicknamed “the Marilyn Monroe of pastrami sandwiches”, not that we would sell over ten million pounds of pastrami. The #19 is a thing of beautiful, with pastrami, Swiss cheese, homemade coleslaw and two slices of twice-baked rye bread. Langer’s was awarded the James Beard America’s Classics award, a couple of years after Philippe’s. And it seems obvious by now, but going to Langer’s for the first time without getting a #19 is a rookie’s mistake.
