Madame Monsieur

Most people believe that French food is expensive, and Madame Monsieur is here to prove them wrong. With croques and sandwiches starting at $5.25, you’ll be surprised by the quality of ingredients and the creativity of their recipes. Alison Barber, the Madame of this establishment, trained at Maison Rostang, a three-Michelin star restaurant in Paris. From her experience in high-end kitchens, she keeps a refined technique and a love for excellent produce. Imagine biting in a tuna sandwich with lemon and cayenne pepper, or their riff on ‘jambon beurre’ with jamon iberico, beurre de baratte and two slices of sourdough bread from Clark’s Street Bakery. Sink your teeth in the croque monsieur’s top layer of caramelized cheese and creme fraiche, but make sure to call-in and book ‘Le Truffle’: inspired by Rostang’s iconic sandwich, this bargain ($25!) comes with Rodolphe le Meunier’s salted beurre de baratte and shavings of black Perigord truffles — we’re not kidding anyone with truffle oil, here. If you happen to be walking by Pershing Square at any other moment of the day, pop in for a croissant, kouign-amann or canelé. Close your eyes, you’ll feel transported into a Parisian apartment.
