Yet another excellent restaurant hidden on a strip mall: Mayura is no exception to the secret rule of LA’s best restaurants. Do not expect typical Indian dishes, Mayura honors the specialities of Kerala, a widely vegetarian region of Southern India. Start with a dosa (a paper-thin crepe made from rice and lentils): the ghee roast dosa comes as a large cone with coconut chutney and spicy sambar. Then proceed to the Dum Biryani, i.e. basmati rice with chicken, various chutneys and a papadum. The vegetarian thali would be ideal if you are still hungry (which is unlikely), with an assortment of small dishes — make sure to soak a naan in there. Or even two.
