Some of the best things in Los Angeles come out of a walk-up window, such as the fried chicken sandwich at The Win-dow, or any scoop of plant-based ice cream at Awan. An Australia native, Zen Ong was inspired by Indonesia when creating his fragrant and creamy pints. For the base (which can be ordered by itself and pairs wonderfully with any other item on the menu), he uses Indonesian coconut cream and coconut water, as well as vanilla beans imported directly from an all-natural farm in Bali. Then he finds the best local produce at the farmers market to come up with the most extraordinary flavors: Garcia’s Organics guava, Burkart Farms persimmon, Mandarin Mans, Harry’s berries, Stuart Farm concord grape, Coleman farms yuzu… There are also some decadent flavors (Valrhona chocolate and Oreos, milk tea stracciatella, peanut salted caramel, cookies and cream, etc) as well as collabs with the hottest chefs in the country such as Malcolm Livingston II and Mei Lin. Every now and then, Zen Ong “drops” a new flavor or collab, just like the most coveted streetwear brands. All of the cool, none of the wait!
