Freedman’s

So far, Ashkenazi cuisine has never been something you’d dream about: gefilte fish, matzo ball soup, chopped liver… However, Freedman’s is debunking those myths with delirious wallpaper and astounding dishes. Toronto-style homemade bagels, a lovely smoked fish plate, a big fat reuben sandwich (with slightly spicy Russian dressing, sauerkraut and our favorite pickle), caviar toasts with fresh butter shavings, salmon bagels with egg salad and nasturtium… The star of the show though, the unmissable, the Liberace that we all adore is the smoked meats plate: brisket and pastrami braised in the oven for hours on end, with some bone marrow (or not). To wash it all down, Freedman’s offers a house-made ginger and quince tonic, $5 pints, or one of the city’s best water jugs. Go check out this funky fish carafe for yourself, and grab a little pastrami while you’re there!
