Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and there’s nothing we hate more than the overpriced prix fixe menus and cheesily decorated dining rooms that come with it. Thankfully there are plenty of spots in LA to head for a more low-key dining experience. From the quirky options at Sqirl to the insanely spicy chicken at Howlin’ Ray’s, here are our five favorite spots for the anti-Valentine’s Day experience.
Sqirl
This Valentine’s Day, Sqirl is offering a very limited “dinner for lunch” special that you’ll definitely want in on. DM on IG for a reserved table with pink tablecloth and flower arrangement, welcome drink, Bub and Grandma’s bread with cultured butter, caesar salad with nutritional yeast croutons, potato aligot, roasted ribeye for two, and a choice of either cheesecake or chocolate cake with chocolate sauce served table side. If this offer is sold out, the crispy rice and sorrel pesto bowl aren’t shabby fallback options.
Gjusta
It’s notoriously difficult to get a spot at Gjusta in the morning hours but come nightfall and the patio will be all yours. They still don’t have a liquor license so bring some wine (no corkage fee: best Valentine’s day surprise), order some brisket or roast chicken, and enjoy a laid-back night out.
Howlin’ Ray’s
Valentine’s Day is supposedly meant for spending time with your significant other so take the chance to do so by standing in line for the best fried chicken in LA, Howlin’ Ray’s. Choose your spice level carefully here and definitely wash off before getting frisky…
Guisados
Guisados is the place you want to head if overpriced tasting menus and dimly lit dining rooms aren’t your thing. Make sure to get the taco sampler plate when you’re dining with your significant other. If you’re dining solo, just get the sampler as well.
